PLASTiC

Mending our relationship with plastic bags.
After researching people's use of plastic bags, we found that most members of the public have a cache of supermarket bags in their homes. This unneccesary overconsumption is what we were wanting to tackle.

There were a few solutions that we found to this problem, all revolving around making use of the cache of bags that most people have under their sink.

Creating keyrings that held space to store a single use plastic bag was one of our solutions, which we handed out at our exhibition.
Another came in the form of knitting a more durable 'bag for life' using recycled strips of single use bags.

Finally, a simple keyring which will flash when the user locks their car and act as a visual reminder to check that they have their plastic bags brought with them.

A campaign by a group of students to raise awareness of the throw-away mentality we have towards plastic bags.

People's habits are changing; less of us are doing a weekly shop and are instead shopping as and when needed. This change of habit is having an adverse effect on consumers routines and consumption of plastic bags; fewer anticipate spur of the moment shopping and face the 5p charge at the till as a result.

PLASTiC'S aim is to help people change behaviours and remember to bring a bag while also utilising existing materials more effectively, reducing consumption. People hold importance in their keys, wallet and phone, rarely leaving the house without them. We want to encourage plastic bags to be part of this too.
